While I was researching my article looking back at the first year of City of Heroes being back I discovered that Rebirth had released an all-new archetype, Guardians. Since then I’ve not had the opportunity to log in and play it yet, but I am most certainly eager to give it a try! Guardians were released on Rebirth in August 2019 and they sound AMAZING! Here’s everything you need to know about the Guardians Archetype in City of Heroes.
The Guardians Archetype was designed in a very similar way to Sentinels in that it takes bits and pieces from existing powersets and combines them in an interesting and new way. Specifically, Guardians combine Dominator style assault primaries with secondaries that combine support options like those in Corruptors with some survivability like those that Scrappers have.

History and Process
Here’s a little bit of information about the history of the Guardians archetype. This is copied directly from the Rebirth website and was published back in August 2019, when the archetype was released on the server. Since then there haven’t really been any updates, but our fingers are crossed that it will be accessible to other servers very soon.
As some may be aware, Guardians are neither an original idea to Rebirth nor are they a creation of Paragon Studios. I’ll cut right to the chase: Guardians were initially developed for the SCoRE private server. The author of that work came to us to see if we would be interested in picking up the Guardian’s torch to carry on Rebirth after being rejected in favor of Sentinels years ago. After some deliberation, and perusing a mountain of spreadsheets, the modteam brought everyone willing to implement Guardian onto the Rebirth devteam to make it a reality for all of you.
We carefully considered the opportunity, and determined that Guardians not only had a place in the dynamic of the game, but they wouldn’t outright replace any one Archetype at their own role, and that they fit the spirit of the original game. I have previously stated that while Rebirth aims to always capture the feel of the game as it played on live, and that didn’t necessarily mean we needed to remain a time capsule of times since passed. Guardians are our first major foray into the world of keeping to the spirit of City of Heroes while contributing what we can to continue its legacy into the future.
Speaking of the future, Guardian for the time-being is exclusive to Rebirth, per its author’s wishes. However, once we have some more content under our belt, everyone involved has agreed to release Guardian to the public for any server to implement, should they wish to. This will likely coincide with our next major Game Update.
Inherent: Resolve Whenever the Guardian helps defeat an enemy, Resolve applies a stacking absorption and status protection effect on that enemy’s target.
- The absorb amount is equal to 5% of the defeated foe’s maximum health per stack, and the status protection is Magnitude 2 per stack. At three stacks, procs of Resolve will not apply new stacks or refresh current stacks until the current duration of any stack of Resolve expires. Each individual stack lasts 15 seconds.

Dark Assault Blind and drain your foes with dark energies. Dark Assault allows you to pummel your foes with heavy hitting melee attacks as well as several ranged attacks. Many of Dark Assault’s powers reduce their victims’ chance to hit.

Radiation Assault You are able to harness the power of the atom to defeat foes at both close and far ranges.Radiation Assault attacks have a chance to inflict the Contaminated state on a target for a moderate amount of time. Powers that deal greater damage, have a longer recharge time, and animation time have a greater chance to inflict Contaminated. Single target attacks hitting Contaminated targets causes a portion of that power’s damage to also hit nearby foes. Radiation Assault attacks deal primarily smashing and energy damage, but this set is also capable of dealing some toxic damage.

Organic Composition Organic Composition users can surround themselves in the forces of nature, enabling them to shield their bodies from harm. Their command over the environment allows them to call forth primal energies to hinder their foes and aid themselves and their allies. Some of their powers place a Bloom effect on themselves and their allies. Each stack of Bloom boosters healing effects on the affected targets by 4% for 30 seconds. Bloom can stack up to 5 times.
